Body Mass Index (BMI) is a widely used health screening tool that estimates whether a person is in a healthy weight range for their height. Our free online BMI Calculator supports both metric and imperial measurements, instantly calculating your BMI score and placing you into the standard World Health Organization (WHO) weight categories.
The formula for BMI is BMI = Weight (kg) / (Height (m))^2. In imperial units, the formula is BMI = (Weight (lbs) / (Height (inches))^2) × 703. While BMI is a useful general screening tool, it does not directly measure body fat percentage or muscle mass.
For adults, a healthy BMI range is between 18.5 and 24.9. A BMI below 18.5 is categorized as underweight, 25.0 to 29.9 is overweight, and 30.0 or above is obese.
BMI can be less accurate for highly muscular individuals because muscle is denser than fat. Since BMI only factors in total weight and height, a muscular athlete might be classified as 'overweight' or 'obese' despite having low body fat.
To calculate BMI manually in metric units, divide your weight in kilograms by your height in meters squared. In imperial units, divide your weight in pounds by your height in inches squared, and multiply the result by 703.
A high BMI (overweight or obese) is associated with an increased risk of developing chronic health conditions, including cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, sleep apnea, and certain cancers.
